Getting to Coober Pedy

Coober Pedy is about 850 km north of Adelaide and 680 km south of Alice Springs, with no station in town and no taxis. You can fly, take the overnight coach, drive, stop for a day off the Ghan, or join a 7-day tour that sleeps a night underground.

Getting to Coober Pedy is the first real decision of the trip. The Stuart Highway is sealed all the way, but it is a long road, and the town is small: no taxis, no airport bus and no railway station.

Below: every way in for 2026, with the times and fares the airline, coach company and rail operator publish, and the cases where a tour is simply easier. If you are going between December and February, read our summer post as well.

The quick answer

Rex flies Adelaide to Coober Pedy usually four times a week in about 2 hours, with one-way fares seen from A$309 for November 2026 to February 2027. Greyhound runs daily from Adelaide (about 11 hours, overnight, from A$259) and from Alice Springs (about 8 hours). The Ghan Expedition stops at Manguri siding for a day in town, March to November. Drivers face about 850 km of highway, and once you are there you need a hire car or a tour, because there are no taxis.

How do you get to Coober Pedy?

By Rex flight from Adelaide, Greyhound coach, car, the Ghan Expedition's day stop or a 7-day tour. Each suits a different trip.

The District Council of Coober Pedy lists the plane, the coach and the drive on its getting-there page. The train is the odd one out: the Ghan only stops nearby on its Expedition package, and you are back on board by dinner. Here is how the options compare for 2026:

Can you fly to Coober Pedy?

Yes. Rex (Regional Express) flies between Adelaide and Coober Pedy usually four times a week, and the flight takes about 2 hours, says the council.

Rex is the only airline on the route. It came out of administration when its sale to the US company Air T was completed in December 2025, and it flies Saab 340 turboprops on its regional network. Coober Pedy is on its booking page. One-way fares from A$309 were showing on the Rex fare calendar for dates between November 2026 and February 2027. Fares move, so check your dates early.

The arrival is where people get caught. The council says there are no taxis in Coober Pedy and no shuttle bus from the airport to town, so ask your accommodation to collect you; the council page also lists an airport shuttle contact. To see the Breakaways and the mines on your own, hire a car: the council names Budget and Enterprise, and Enterprise lists its branch at the airport. Book the car with the flight, not on arrival.

Flying in for a weekend? The Saturday Painted Desert day starts in town, with pickup, a picnic lunch and four seats at most.

Is there a bus from Adelaide to Coober Pedy?

Yes. Greyhound runs daily, leaving Adelaide at 7pm and taking 11 hours 15 minutes, which puts you in Coober Pedy early the next morning.

The coach leaves from the Central Bus Station at 85 Franklin Street in Adelaide, on the same block as the 91 Franklin Street meeting point of the Untamed Escapes tours. In Coober Pedy it stops at the Bus Terminal, 52-56 Hutchison Street, in the middle of town. The return leaves Coober Pedy at 7:25pm and takes about 11 hours. Greyhound quotes fares from A$259 each way, in Early Bird and Flexible tiers, and the earlier you book the better.

From the north, the council puts the Alice Springs coach at about 8 hours; Greyhound's Alice Springs stop is on Leichhardt Terrace, outside the library. Luggage is generous: one 8 kg carry-on and two checked bags of up to 20 kg each at no extra cost. Seats recline and there is air conditioning and a toilet on board. Take a jumper anyway, and a neck pillow for the overnight run.

Does the Ghan stop at Coober Pedy?

Only the Ghan Expedition, Darwin to Adelaide. On day 3 the train stops at Manguri siding and a coach takes guests into Coober Pedy for the day.

Journey Beyond Rail runs the Expedition as a 4-day, 3-night package from north to south. In Coober Pedy the day includes the Breakaways, the town and its opal history, and a lunch served underground; a scenic flight over the Painted Hills and Lake Eyre is an optional upgrade. Guests rejoin the train for dinner as it heads south, so it is a day visit, not a way to stay in town.

The 2026 season runs March to November, with departures on Wednesdays and Saturdays and a headline price from A$3,990 per person; the last 2026 departures run in November. For 2027 the season is again March to November, from A$4,190 per person in a Gold Twin cabin on an advance purchase fare. If you want a night in a dugout and the Breakaways at first light, the road tours below do that.

How long is the drive from Adelaide to Coober Pedy?

About 850 km on sealed highway: one very long day or two easier ones, with a stop at Port Augusta.

The council's route: north from Adelaide to Port Wakefield, the Augusta Highway to Port Augusta, then right onto the Stuart Highway to Coober Pedy. The NRMA puts Port Augusta to Pimba at about 1 hour 45 minutes. Just past Pimba the salt beds of Lake Hart lie beside the road, the same stop the swag tour makes on day 3. Glendambo is the key fuel stop: it is the only roadhouse on the roughly 250 km run north to Coober Pedy, so fill up with fuel and water there.

North of Coober Pedy, fuel is at Cadney Homestead and Marla. The highway is sealed from Adelaide to Darwin, but dirt roads in the outback change fast after rain: check the SA outback road reports before any side trip. For the route day by day, with the Flinders Ranges and Uluru, see our Adelaide to Uluru via Coober Pedy guide.

Is a tour the easiest way to get to Coober Pedy?

For most first-time visitors, yes. The 7-day tours between Adelaide and Uluru or Alice Springs do the driving, book a night underground and include the Breakaways.

All four 7-day tours on this site are run by Untamed Escapes and spend one night in Coober Pedy. The camping trips sleep you in a dorm at Radeka Downunder; the Explorer's Way trips use the underground Coober Pedy Experience Motel. Each visits Old Timers Mine. For a side-by-side look, see our Coober Pedy tours from Adelaide guide.

The trade-off is time in town: one evening and one morning. If you want longer, fly or take the coach in, stay a few nights and add the Saturday Painted Desert tour. If you want the whole road in one go, take a tour.
